What does a planning officer do?

Photograph of several two storey houses on a streetA planning officer works on behalf of the local council to provide an initial assessment of the building plans. The officer checks that the proposed structure conforms to the planning guidelines laid out by state and local authorities.

These guidelines include: land zoning, setbacks from boundaries, wall and building heights and lengths, privacy of neighbours, aesthetics and other relevant items such as overshadowing.
