Building surveyors and building inspectors

Sketch of magnifying glassBuilding surveyors and building inspectors are responsible for ensuring that a structure complies with building regulations and standards. Building inspectors act on behalf of building surveyors.

Building surveyors assess building applications and issue approvals for building work to commence. They perform detailed inspections of the structure as each stage of the build process is completed. For example: footings, slab, framing and final inspections. At each inspection they check whether the design, materials and construction meet the required structural integrity standards and legal regulations. When the work complies, the building surveyor authorises construction to continue to the next stage (at the final inspection the building surveyor would certify that construction is complete).
